A Trip Down the Pacolet and a Journey Through Time: Visiting Pettit and Poole Family Sites in Spartanburg SC

Our plan was to navigate down the Pacolet River and camp under the stars on the land that once belonged to Henry Pettit and William Poole. We set out to explore the old Poole Springs (Healing Springs), Pettit Mill Branch, Tumbling Shoals, Lawsons Fork, and various other sites. We planned to exit the river the next evening at Pacolet Mills....

Brandon - wonderful story. When we were last in contact, I told you I intended to go to the Pettit Cemetery near Cowpens and try to clean it up a little. Apparently since it's in the woods there's not a lot of upkeep. I never got around to doing that in 2024 but I plan to it this spring when my wife takes off to take her elderly aunt to Graceland. You told me about John Pettit who you reference here as "Jack" and you also told me the cemetery property was owned by Mr. Charles Birch. You gave me his address and I wrote a letter to him. I also tried to contact John Pettit. Both my efforts were to no avail. I never got a response from Mr. Birch and had no luck contacting John. If you or anyone who reads this comment can provide me with the information of who to contact I would like to get it cleared before I load up all my yard tools and head to South Carolina. Thanks and keep the Pettit/Poole info coming!!

Brandon,
This is a wonderful story. I am so glad you got to do this trip with your son. Wow, I would love to go over and see this area where the battle of Cowpens occurred. I would also like to meet the Pettit cousins that live there. I would like to meet Doug Pettit and visit the cemetery. I also couldn't believe the size of that turtle. Wow!

Brandon, thank you so much for making this webpage. This is just absolutely wonderful.
